Halloween Without the Nightmares: A Parent's Guide to Friendly Frights
Ask a five-year-old what Halloween is and you'll hear two things in the same breath: "Candy!" and, a little quieter, "the scary house on the corner." Little kids love the idea of spooky season — the costumes, the pumpkins, the glow sticks — right up until a lawn decoration jumps out at them. The trick isn't skipping Halloween. It's letting them meet the spooky stuff at their own speed.
Start with friendly faces
Coloring pages and picture books are a gentle first step because your child holds the controls: a picture can't jump, growl or follow them home. Look for the friendly versions of the classic characters — a smiling ghost, a vampire bat with a sweet tooth instead of a scary one, Halloween animals busy at cute jobs. A ghost delivering the mail is very hard to be afraid of, and coloring one puts your child in charge of how spooky it gets: purple and glittery, if they want.
Read the adventure before the big night
A story where a character feels a little scared — and then okay again — gives kids a script to borrow when it's their turn. A lantern that loses its glow and gets helped back to shining, a trick-or-treat route that turns out fine: read it a few nights before October 31 and it quietly becomes the story they tell themselves out there in the dark.
Keep a pause button handy
- Let them choose the costume — being the one in the mask changes everything.
- Give them their own flashlight; holding the light makes the dark smaller.
- Agree on a word that means "too much — let's cross the street."
- End the night with a calm coloring page, not one more haunted house.
Halloween doesn't have to be brave to be magical. Sometimes the bravest thing a little kid can do is color the monster pink — and that's a pretty great place to start.
